What are Public Performance Rights?

Public Performance Rights (PPR) are the legal rights to publicly show a film or video (media). 

  • Normally managed by the media producer or distributor
  • Rights can assign PPR to others through a license

When are PPR required? 

PPR are NOT required for:

  • Home viewing
  • Screening in the context of face-to-face teaching 

PPR are required for: 

  • All screenings of copyrighted media to audiences outside of the curriculum
  • For example: 
    • student club events
    • extracurricular sponsored events such as general lectures
    • Film series

Contacts for Obtaining PPR

When inquiring about PPR, have the following information on hand:

  • Your name and the name of your campus organization
  • Where and to whom you will show the film
  • How your campus organization will pay for the rights to show the movie
  • Contact information for your campus organization
  • Whether or not you need a copy of the film
