How to do Research

Why be Organized?

WHY BE ORGANIZED?

  • To cite anything you have read and to find a copy of the article you have read or want to read later.
  • To efficiently manage citations and research content, on your desktop and between databases.
  • TO SAVE TIME!

CAUTION: Each database allows you to have a personal copy of an article, but you do not have the right to distribute it.

You may:

  • print it,
  • email it to yourself,
  • download it to your desktop,
  • place it in a Folder,
  • save a citation.

Citations

Citations

All publishers provide articles cited in APA Style. These citations may be easily emailed to yourself and then added to your Reference List.

TIP: ALWAYS check computer generated citations against an example to ensure there are no grammatical or formatting errors.

Digital Object Indentifier (DOI)

According to the American Psychological Association (APA):

A digital object identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned by a registration agency (the International DOI Foundation) to identify content and provide a persistent link to its location on the Internet.

The publisher can assign a DOI when your article is published and made available electronically. Not all articles have DOI's.

Publishers use hyperlinks to identify the content in their databases, but they do not hold the location for anyone to read the article unless they are logged into the library and most often don’t take you back to the content even when you are logged in. So do not use hyperlinks in your citations or rely on them to get back to content.
