How to do Research

Searching for a Known Item

Sometimes you know what you're looking for. The citation is in front of you and it’s just a matter of determining if the library has the journal in question.

To search for a known journal or article:

  • Click  the Publications tab at the top of the Advanced Search page in a database;
  • Search the journal name, enclosed in quotation marks (e.g. "American Drama") or browse the list (if present) for the title to see if the full-text of the journal is available;
  • If the full text coverage of the journal is available, check to make sure full text coverage is available for your date of interest;
  • Click into the journal title link and search on your author or title (in quotation marks) in the Search Within This Publication box;
  • OR look up your article by year, volume and page;
  • OR click into an issue and browse or do a keyword search;
  • Each journal and journal issue is essentially a mini-database that is searchable by keyword.
